Big 5 Update
Western Pride: The 2 big male lions from this pride were seen 4 times this month in the southern section of the reserve on their normal territorial patrol. It’s nice from time to time when they come down this side because guests can sometimes hear them roar from the lodge. One of the lionesses is believed to be pregnant and has not been seen for a while now. When new cubs are born a lioness will usually keep them in hiding for about 6 weeks (sometimes a little longer if there are stronger cubs in the pride). Cannot wait to see the new arrivals soon!!
Southern Pride: This pride (a lioness and her 4 cubs) have returned to the southern plains at last after hanging around the Sterkstroom valley for long now. We have had some lekker sightings of them this month on their home ground and all the cubs are still healthy and strong and are also getting quite big now.
In the beginning of the month the breeding herds were in the south for about a week and gave us some spectacular sightings, even got the chance to see a new born calf not so long ago. Then towards the middle of the month the herds started moving north/west and have been around that section of the reserve since. It has become hard to see a breeding herd since the 16th of this month because at the moment they are on the opposite side of the reserve to us. But…they will return soon, in the meantime elephant bulls are still around the Sterkstroom at least giving us some interesting sightings for the rest of the month.
It has been a tough month to spot the elusive leopard (they seem to have become a little shy). We unfortunately have not had a leopard sighting since the 20th of July…Even though this month has been quiet in terms of spotting the spotted cat, we have had some close calls. We just missed a female and her cub on a kill in the middle of the month by a few minutes. I also had some load audio a few days ago at rhino dam from a male but no sighting. Hopefully in September we might be a little luckier…?
The start of the month was a bit quiet but (some great news) for the past 10 days two bulls have been hanging around “weaver city” in the Sterkstroom valley. Buffalo Sightings this month have been a lot better than last month and most of the time it is tricky to find them (since there are only about 5 bulls on the rest of the reserve).
