In the beginning of this month this pride was a little too far north for us to get to but around the 10th of this month they came back down to their favoured area (around the western airstrip)… Since then they have given our guests some lovely sightings, the one lioness that had left the pride last month is back but no new faces yet. We have to wait and see so we can work out the reason she left… The 2 males (seen above on the old eastern airstrip below our access road) actually paid us a very close visit on the 22nd. They walked through our staff village (like right through) down towards the lodge, probably following up on a single lioness that had been around a few days before they came. This is the first time in the 4 years that I have been here that these 2 males have ever come this close to our lodge…Interesting!
These lions were only seen 3 times this month…They are still in the south at the moment but it has been very difficult to spot them with all the tall grass in that area. Our last sighting of them was a special one though. They had just finish their kill the night before and were about to leave the area the next morning. We arrived just in time to see the mom leave her cubs and head to a dam for a drink and while we waited for her return the 4 cubs started chasing a baby rhino around, which was very exciting, before the mother rhino woke up and chased the cubs up a ridge. The lioness returned and started calling her cubs because they were nowhere to be seen and after a short bit all 4 came running down from their hiding place to greet their mother… It was such a lekker sighting to see this interaction and hear all the noises being made!
